Welcome to the official website of the Weimaraner Klub of Gauteng, the only KUSA-affiliated Weimaraner club in South Africa  (And yes the K in Klub is intentional – the name of the club was derived from that of the German club)

The aim of the klub is to maintain and improve the quality of Weimaraners in South Africa by expecting Klub registered breeders to comply with a Code of Ethics set by the Klub. Since the klub’s inception members were encouraged to have their dogs x-rayed for hip dysplasia.

The rules for hip dysplasia state that:

  1. Dogs/bitches with a Grading of A1, A2, B1 can be bred to dogs/bitches with the same grading or that of B2, C1, C2.
  2. Dogs/bitches with a grading of B2, C1, C2 may only be mated to dogs/bitches with a grading of A1, A2, B1

Since January 1992, all Weimaraners are expected to comply with these regulations before a litter can be registered at Kusa.

Klub members are encouraged to show their dogs at KUSA shows, and we also host our own Open and Championship show in February and August respectively

Also, since a Weimaraner is first off a working dog, the Klub hosts an annual Shooting Ratings test in June, with training sessions in the two months before that. Klub members, and indeed all interested Weimaraner owners are welcome to bring their dogs for training on the training Sundays, and also so the dogs can be tested for Retriever and Shooting ability at the Shooting Ratings.

Shooting Ratings 2017

The annual Shooting Ratings of the Weimaraner Klub of Gauteng will
once again be held this year at Oppiedam near Nigel on 24th June 2017.
We need to organize the following before then:

1) Arrange for birds for the tests
2) Arrange for catering
3) Arrange guns, throwers etc for the tests.

In order to plan and organize the Ratings successfully, we require
your input as to how many people will be attending and how many dogs
will be entering in each test.

1) How many dogs will you be entering?
2) In which tests will you be entering the dogs?
3) How many additional people, if any, will be joining you for lunch?

Because we get the use of the venue for free, we are required to make
use of the catering and cash bar for the day. Therefore we require
each handler of a dog to also pay for lunch. Cost of the catering on
the day will be R150 per person, which will also include coffee and
sandwiches on arrival.

The tests that will be offered this year and their costs are :

Novice Shooting Dog: Club Members – R150, Non-members – R200 per dog entered
Novice Retriever Dog: Club Members – R150, Non-members – R200 per dog entered
Shooting Dog: Club Members – R150, Non-members – R200 per dog entered
Retriever Dog: Club Members – R150, Non-members – R200 per dog entered

Note: Your dog must first pass Novice Shooting Dog before advancing to
the next test. You can enter for both Novice Shooting Dog and Novice
Retriever Dog on the same day but will only be eligible to participate
in the Novice Retriever Dog test if your dog passed the Novice
Shooting Dog test on the day or at a previous Ratings

All Weimaraners are welcome, registered and unregistered

Please let us know who will be attending and entering which test by
email to [email protected] or by phoning 082 896 0378. This
should please be done by 31st May.

All entries and payments for tests and lunch close on the 7th June.
Please make use of the entry form attached – print, complete and then
scan and email back to [email protected] or fax to (011)

One form should be filled in for each dog entered. Also mark on the
form how many people will be booking lunch (bottom right of the form
where it says Lunch). Proof of Payment should be sent along with the
entry form(s).

Beware of puppy scams

As always there are scammers in every industry but someone has brought a puppy scam to our attention, which involves the sale of Weimaraner puppies.

Please be careful when researching breeders – always ask the club if you are not sure of a breeder that contacts you. Reputable breeders will not send you spam to sell their puppies – most of us already have puppy lists with people waiting for puppies and the club’s puppy list is also shared with club breeders. And if it seems too good to be true, it normally is

KUSA now the only legal Canine Breeder’s Society and Registering Authority in South Africa

Following lengthy negotiations with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), we are delighted to announce that the Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA) has now been registered by the DAFF as a Breeders’ Society and as a Registering Authority for 218 dog breeds. This is with immediate effect and constitutes the final step in KUSA’s stated objective to comply, as required, with the provisions of the Animal Improvement Act, No. 62 of 1998 (“the Act”), of which the DAFF is the custodian.

This affirmation by the South African Government of KUSA’s authoritative position in South African canine affairs has far-reaching implications for our organisation, inter alia:

  • Section 11(1)(b) of the Act excludes the registration of more than one Breeders’ Society for any animal of a specified breed. KUSA is therefore the only Breeders’ Society registered in terms of the Act for any of the 218 breeds it had applied for.
  • Similarly, Section 11(2)(a) of the Act prohibits the registration of more than one Registering Authority for any breed of animal, which means that KUSA is the only Registering Authority for the 218 breeds in question.

In his letter to the Acting Chairman of Fedco confirming the above, the Registrar: Animal Improvement, Mr MJ Mamabolo, concludes: “I take this opportunity of welcoming KUSA under the authority of the South African Animal Improvement Act, and look forward to a successful ongoing partnership.”

I trust that the membership of KUSA will join me in celebrating this critically important milestone in KUSA’s 125-year history.

Kind regards,

CJL Griffith
Acting Chairman: Federal Council of KUSA
